Preparation Tips for SSC CHSL Tier1 for Quantitative Aptitude section

Staff Selection Commission conducts CHSL exam which is open for under-graduates also. The difficulty level is low as compared to graduate level exams for government jobs. Competition is high as contestants are more in number for it being a higher secondary level exam.

The question paper has four sections namely, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning and General Awareness.

Out of these most of the time aspirants face problem in solving quantitative aptitude section. It is a complex subject and this section is designed to analyze 
the numerical abilities of an individual at a given situation. In this section 25 questions are asked carrying 2 marks each.

Before one starts practicing it is essential to know the syllabus laid down by Staff Selection Commission in its official notification which is given below:

Syllabus of Quantitative Aptitude:

Arithmetic:

     1. Number Systems:

Computation of Whole Number, Decimal and Fractions, Relationship between numbers.
    2. Fundamental arithmetical operations:
Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest (Simple and Compound), Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Allegation, Time and distance, Time and work.
   3. Algebra:
Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra and Elementary surds (simple problems) and Graphs of Linear Equations.
   4. Geometry:
Familiarity with elementary geometric figures and facts:
Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles.
   5. Mensuration:
Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square Base
   6. Trigonometry:
Trigonometry, Trigonometric ratios, Complementary angles, Height and distances (simple problems only) Standard Identities like sin2 + Cos2 =1 etc.
   7. Statistical Charts:
Use of Tables and Graphs: Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bardiagram, Pie-chart
After thoroughly going through the syllabus, one can start following the tips given below to conquer the complex section of SSC CHSL 2018 Exam:
  • It is very important to learn various tricks and shortcuts for complex calculations like multiplication, square roots, cube roots, etc. These are speed building tricks and one can solve the questions fast.
  • Revise the basic mathematics formulae every day by making a list of almost all the formulae of the concepts you have learned so far. It work wonders if you know the formulae before solving the questions.
  • There are certain topics like computation of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, relationship, between the numbers, percentage, ratio and proportion, square roots, average, interest, profit and loss, discounts, partnership, mixtures and allegation etc. , needs lot of practice. Practice them topic wise by setting up a time table to give a thorough revision. “Practice makes a man perfect.” Practice unless you achieve perfection in all the topics as it helps in building confidence.
  • Though there is no specific topic weightage for any topic in this section but if you learn the basic topics like Concentrate more on percentages, DI, Number Series and Simplification, it will help you in achieving accuracy level while solving the questions.
  • Practice as many previous year question papers as you can to understand the pattern of questions being asked by SSC.
  • Concentrate on building speed by answering 100 questions within 60 minutes. This is the speed which is required to achieve good rank and score well in this section.
